Vagina Smelling Like Onions; The worries of a smelling vagina have overtaken the minds of many women. The smell can be like onion or something worse than that.  Many women have natural, normal vaginal odor that does smell like flowers.  The vagina can be kept clean and fresh smelling using several products being sold out there today. Despite using those products, a woman can still end up smelling bad in the vagina. What can be the cause of this?

Vagina smelling like onions: causes

You need to identify what is responsible if you notice that your vagina smells like onion.  Some of the possible causes of vagina smelling like onions are:

1. Certain foods

Your urine and vaginal discharge can have a strong smell of onion or garlic if you consume a lot of garlic or onion in your food.

The urine can also smell strongly if you consume asparagus and this smelly urine can be mistaken for vagina smell.  Your sweat or vaginal discharge can take on very funny smells when you consume a lot of heavily spiced or curried foods.

If the food you take is the cause of the vaginal smell, then you can expect the smell to be over after 48 hours of eating those foods.  You can flush the scent from your sweat and urethra by drinking a lot of water.

You may have to see a doctor if the smell persists for more than three days; it may be as a result of an underlying condition.

2. Sweat

Your sweat contains a lot of bacteria and skin cells, and it can come out through virtually all the pores on your skin.  Therefore, we can say that sweat is not just a fluid coming out of the skin when you are hot; it is more than that.

Your sweat can stink on the skin, though it has the benefit of helping you to cool your body when hot. The sweat can equally mix with the fluid produced by the vagina, and this can change your natural scent and cause hair bumps on vagina.  If you sweat a lot as an individual, then the smell being released may be very strong; this happens to most women after exercise or during the warm months.

You need to continue to sweat for health reasons. In fact, you cannot stop yourself from sweating; it is vital for your health.  Be that as it may, it is possible to prevent the smell resulting from the sweating and this can be done by changing your underwear.

Your underwear should be made of natural, breathable fabrics, like cotton. Make sure you wash your exercise or workout clothes after wearing them one or two times.

3. Some medications

Vaginal bacteria may be affected by antibiotics, and this can lead to odor changes such as vagina smelling like onions and vaginal discharge. There is a reduction in vaginal discharge when you take drugs known as antihistamines, and this can also change vaginal smell since the discharge may dry out as a result of the drug.  Additionally, the genital area may be affected when you apply essential oil or herbal therapies.

4. Poor hygiene

The vagina naturally ensures a balance of bacteria to take care of itself. The bacteria can prevent irritation and infections.

Odor problem such as vagina smelling like onions can equally occur when you fail to change your underwear daily.  You may equally experience irritation due to poor hygiene of the labia.  There may be an unbalanced growth of bacteria, and this can cause vaginal infection also.

It is essential to wash the vaginal area and the labia on a regular basis using water and mild soap.  Washing will remove dried sweat, dead skin and bacteria.

Other things to do

  • Limit yourself to cotton underwear. Avoid underwear made of polyester, silk, satin and other synthetic materials. The moisture and sweat can be wicked away from the vagina by the cotton and this will help to prevent vaginal odor.
  • Do not wear clothes that are tight-fitting too frequently. Such clothes do not permit adequate air circulation around your vagina; this can lead to accumulation of bacteria in the area.
  • Do not wear wet pool clothes for too long after coming out of the pool.
  • When you sweat session is over at the gym, make sure you change the gym clothe without delay.

5. Bacteria vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is caused by Gardnerella vaginalis, and it can overgrow in the vaginal area when there is a disturbance of the normal bacteria ecosystem in the vagina.  This condition manifests by the production of runny, grey, thin, vagina discharge with strong fish smell.  The strong odor can come up immediately after sex in some women; this is because the condition can be aggravated on contact with semen.  You can put an end to this condition by using certain antibiotics. The condition can make you susceptible to some other infections and it is irritating.

6. Trichomoniasis

The ‘trich” stands for short. Trichomoniasis is a kind of infection caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, which is a single-cell animal.  The organism is transferred during sexual intercourse, which makes it an example of sexually transmitted infection (STI) Another example of STI gotten from sexual intercourse which is sometimes confused with trichomoniasis is the female genital warts (also known as genital warts in vagina).

The Center for Diseases Control and Prevention stated that about 3.7 million Americans have trichomonas infection.  The infection is more common in women than in men.  It is also more common in older women than men.

Symptoms of the infection only come up in 30% of those infected.  Aside from a strong vaginal smell, the following symptoms can also occur:

  • Discomfort
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Discomfort during urination

Never delay in seeing a doctor if you suspect that you have a trichomonas infection.  The doctor will administer prescription treatment on you to get rid of the causative organism.  If you must fully eliminate the infection, it is very important that you take the full dose of the treatment prescribed by the doctor.

7. A forgotten tampon

Your vagina may smell like a dead animal when you leave a tampon in the vagina for several days; this is not nice at all. However, you can put an end to the problem by simply removing the tampon.  At times, such a tampon left in the vagina for too long can lead to serious vaginal infection; though this occurs rarely.  If you notice such an infection, you should not delay in seeing your doctor.

8. Rectovaginal fistula

Rectovaginal fistula refers to an abnormal opening between the vagina and the rectum.  This can happen when there is a leakage from the lower part of the large intestine into the vagina.

The content of the bowel can also leak via the fistula into the vagina.  As a result, stool or gas can come out through the vagina. This can cause the vagina to produce an unusual smell.

Rectovaginal fistula is not common at all.  It can be caused by injuries, especially during childbirth.  Some other common causes are inflammatory bowel disease and Crohn’s disease.

The size of the opening of the fistula and its location can determine the symptoms of the rectovaginal fistula.  For instance, the woman may see pus, stool or gas come in out of the vagina and not from the rectum.  If the opening is small, the unusual smell may be produced.

Infection may occur around the fistula opening, and this may cause symptoms like irritation, itching, burning and fever.

Never delay seeing your doctor if you have a fistula.  They will carry out a pelvic and physical examination on you to confirm whether there is an abnormal opening or not.

In most instances, the condition is corrected via surgical procedures.  Many of the individuals that have fistula will need to undergo surgical correction.  Also, any infection that might have occurred as a result of the fistula can be treated using antibiotics.  The irritation and sensitivity can also be treated using anti-inflammatory medicine.

9. Change in hormone levels

The current state of the menstrual cycle can determine the quantity of vaginal discharge you produce.  However, vaginal pH and discharge can be affected by vaginal cream, contraceptive pills and hormonal therapies. Women can have a fungal infection and bacterial vaginosis during menopause since there is a reduction of estrogen during this period.

General tips to help remove vaginal odor

You can adopt the steps below to reduce that unwanted smell in the vaginas even before diagnosis of the cause:

  • Wash the area using soap and warm water on a regular basis. Make sure the soap used is rinsed thoroughly out of the vagina to prevent a pH upset.
  • Make sure you only wear underwear made of breathable fabrics. You should avoid materials like polyester, satin and silk; rather opt for cotton.
  • Avoid regular wearing of tight-fitting pants. Moisture is released from the vagina on a regular basis.  The bacteria balance in the vagina may be upset if there is no space for the moisture to escape because of the tight-fitting pants you wear. As a result, you may end up with irritation and odor.
  • Avoid using scented and perfumed washes.  Scented washes may worsen the odor, though many people mistakenly think it will improve the situation.  Do not use douches also since they can kill the good bacteria in the vagina, leading to an upset of vaginal bacteria balance. You may experience irritation and vaginitis as a result.
  • If the only symptom you have is onion smell in the vagina, then you should drink a lot of water or fluid and also reduce the consumption of smelly foods.
  • The bacterial balance in the vagina can be reestablished by using probiotics. You should use mild soap to wash the external region of your vagina; that is, the labia and vulva. You can bring about good hygiene this way.

When to see your doctor

You should see your doctor if your effort towards your vagina smelling like onions is not paying off. You should also make an appointment with the doctor if you are having a fever or unusual discharge.  The odor may occur as a result of very serious issues that may not be amenable to the steps taken at home to eliminate the vaginal smell.  You can prevent the further problem by carrying out the proper care of your vagina.  Never hesitate to call the doctor if the problem is bigger than what you can handle.
