What causes genital warts (HPV infection)? More than 100 types of HPV are responsible for genital warts, like all other forms of warts. The HPV is known to infect the skin’s top layer. Very few number of HPV strains can lead to genital warts.

The ones that lead to genital warts among them are contagious and can be transmitted via sexual contact with individuals having HPV.  The trait is not transmitted by other forms of HPV.

At times, hey can lead to venereal warts or condylomata acuminate, which is a genital lesion. Cervical cancer and precancerous changes in the uterine cervix can be caused by a subgroup of the HPV infecting the genital tract.  There is an association between HPV infection and genital cancer development. The type of HPV that leads to cervical cancer has linked to penile cancer and can also be linked with neck and head cancers. Sexual contact is the main means of transmitting genital warts, as well as HPV infection. Increase in the number of sexual partners you have also increase the risk of getting genital warts.

Up to 65% of individuals having a sexual relationship with individuals that have genital warts can get the infection also.

What causes genital warts : Types of HPV that causes genital warts

The commonest types of HPV that infect the genital region are HPV types 11, 6, 16 and 18.  Other forms of HPV can equally lead to infection, and  HPV-6 and HPV-11 are the commonest among them that are associated with benign lesions, like genital warts; these types are called “low-risk” HPV types. HPV-18 and HPV-11, on the other hand, are found in genital and cervical cancers. They can also lead to severe dysplasia of the cervix.  They are the types called “high-risk” HPV types.

Other forms of HPV can cause infection on the skin and also lead to common warts in other parts of the body. Some forms of HPV, like HPV 5 and 8, can cause skin cancer frequently in individuals having a condition called epidermodysplasiaverruciformis (EV).
