1. Soybeans

Soybeans can be either genetically modified or natural. When buying soybeans, it is better to buy only organic soybeans since it is natural.

 

2. Maize

3. Papayas

4. Sugar

5. Canola

6. Zucchini

It is considered as a GMO since it has been modified to resists some virus strains. Before you buy zucchini, first find out if it is organic.

 

7. Dairy

This refers to milk and up to 1/5th of the of all the cows for generating dairy products get injected with growth hormones for an increase in the quantity of milk in the United States. Bovine Growth Hormones is also called rBGH and approved by the FDA for boosting milk production by up to 15%. Despite this, there is an increased risk of colon and breast cancer, according to scientific research.

 

8. Cotton

Bt Cotton is genetically modified, and this form is common in India and China. These forms of cotton increase the risk of heart disease. It is safer always to buy organic cotton oil when you want to buy cotton oil.

 

9. Potato

Nine approved forms of GMO potatoes are available in the United States.  The western diet is rich in potatoes as a major staple. It is a source of energy obtained via carbohydrate.  There are indications that GMO potatoes can turn out to be the next big GMO food being sold in the market.  Genetically modified potatoes can easily withstand bugs, fungi, viruses and bruising. They also have a low level of acrylamide.

The new generation of GM potatoes produced by J.R. Simplot is expected to have higher marketability compared to others. Up to 400 acres worth of Simplot GMO potatoes was sold in the southeast and Midwest grocery stores in the summer of 2014.  There are plans underway by the company to increase the quantity of genetically modified potatoes produced in the future. Restaurants and grocery stores have a prettier appearance and longer shelf life because they do not get bruised.  The Nightshade family is composed of tomatoes, potatoes, and some others. People following Autoimmune Protocol diet (AIP) usually avoid fruits belonging to the Nightshade family.

 

10. Flax

The University of Saskatchewan in Canada is responsible for developing GMO Flax.  GMO flax got approved by the FDA and the USDA for animal and human use as far back as the late 90s. GMO flax is developed to tolerate herbicides containing sulfonylurea.  It has also found use in anti-diabetic pharmaceutical drugs.  Flax oil and flax are considered as health foods.  Also, they are healthy when they get sprayed with chemicals, which will make them cause hypoglycemia both in humans and animals.

 

11. Farm Raised Salmon

The first genetically modified farm-raised salmon was approved by the FDA at the end of 2015. The name of the salmon is AquAdvantage Salmon. This form of salmon is not local. After breeding it in Canada, these are transported to Panama where they are raised. After they have developed, they are then sold in other countries, including the United States. You will need to buy wild caught salmon to avoid buying GMO salmon.  You can get a good quantity of wild salmon from countries, like New Zealand and Alaska. GMO salmon is a cross between sea eel and salmon. As a result, the genetically modified salmon can grow double in size and faster.

The effect found in GMO is equally applicable to other foods, like:

  • Yellow squash
  • Aspartame and
  • Cloned Meat

FDA Genetically Modified Food List: Are GMO foods safe?

Outcrossing

Gene migration into conventional crops or related species, called outcrossing, in the wild from GM plants and crop mixing gotten from conventional seeds with GM crops may have an indirect effect on food security and food safety. There had been reported cases of where GM crops approved for industrial and animal food uses have low levels in foods for human consumption. Strategies for reducing mixing and clear separation of the fields in which conventional crops and GM crops are grown have been developed by several countries
